Hooded Plover population recovery on Phillip Island
The population of breeding Hooded Plovers (ππ©πͺπ―π°π³π―πͺπ΄ π€πΆπ€πΆπππ’π΅πΆπ΄) on Phillip Island has increased threefold in the last 30 years, making it one of the few increasing populations over the time period.
Conservation actions have included regular population counts, identification of threats, eradication of foxes from the island, strategic removal of cats near breeding territories, public education programs by Phillip Island Nature Parks staff and volunteers to reduce disturbance, and enforcement of dog regulations on beaches used by Hooded Plovers.
