Best management practice programs in Reef catchments
The Queensland Government has supported voluntary industry-led Best Management Practice (BMP) programs since 2012 to help increase the agricultural industry’s adoption of best practices in Reef catchments. BMP programs support farmers’ efforts to maximise productivity and profitability while reducing water quality impacts, thereby improving the health of the Reef. This contributes to reducing anthropogenic end-of-catchment nutrient, sediment and chemical loads and progressing towards the 2025 water quality targets. Best management practice programs include the Smartcane BMP (https://smartcane.com.au/), Banana BMP program (https://abgc.org.au/projects-resources/best-management-practices-bmp/) and Hort360 Great Barrier Reef (https://www.growcom.com.au/portfolio/hort360-gbr-queensland/).
